Alberto Monti

Alberto Monti is Associate Professor of Comparative Law with tenure at the Institute for Advanced Study IUSS Pavia and Head of the “Risk Governance” Research Section at the EUCENTRE Foundation. He teaches Comparative Law and Economics in the IUSS Social Sciences Class, as well as Risk and Emergency Regulation at the UME Graduate School (Understanding and Managing Extremes). He received his J.D. (1995, cum laude) from the University of Milan Law School, his LL.M. (2000, Int’l Legal Studies) from New York University (NYU) School of Law and his Ph.D. (2001, Comparative Law) from the University of Trento. Associate Professor of Comparative Law at Bocconi University in Milan from 2003 to 2011, he led for nine years the teaching and research activities in the field of Economic Analysis of Law at the Department of Law “Angelo Sraffa”. He taught in the Graduate School in Public Administration at the Italian’s Prime Minister’s Cabinet Office (2000), in the European Master of Law and Economics (Erasmus Mundus Programme), and has been Visiting Scholar and Fellow University of California at Berkeley School of Law (1994, 1996 e 1997), Research Fellow at the International Centre for Economic Research (ICER) of Turin (2001-2002) and Hauser Global Scholar at New York University (1999-2000). Alberto Monti has lectured at numerous academic institutions worldwide, including Fordham University, New York University, the University of California at Hastings College of the Law, and the University of Connecticut; he also teaches Insurance Law at the Milan Institute of Technology, where he is Scientific Coordinator of the Legal Area in the CINEAS Professional Programs in Insurance. A member of the OECD High-Level Advisory Board on the Financial Management of Large-Scale Catastrophes, since 2002 he has been a consultant to the OECD Directorate for Financial and Enterprise Affairs and to the Brazilian Institute of Insurance Law. Admitted to the Italian Bar (1998), to the Supreme Court Bar (2011) and specialised in the fields of insurance, reinsurance, banking and financial laws, Professor Monti regularly acts as outside counsel, legal advisor and arbitrator for major international clients. Alberto Monti is the Chief Editor of the electronic journal “Global Jurist” (De Gruyter) and the author of books, articles and reports on Insurance and Reinsurance Law and Economics, Comparative Law and the Financial Management of Catastrophic Risks.
