As Head of Geo Risks in Corporate Underwriting, Anselm Smolka is responsible for model development for risks from natural perils in Munich RE. He joined the GeoRisks Research Group at Munich RE as an expert for natural hazards in 1977. His work there has mainly been on seismology, earthquake risk, natural hazards, geology and remote sensing, and how those relate to the insurance and reinsurance industry. He holds Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Geology from the Ludwig-Maximilian University in Munich, and is a member of the German Society for Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics, the Association of German Geoscientists, the American Geophysical Union, the Seismological Society of America and the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute. He served at the editorial board of the journal “Natural Hazards” and is an ex-member of the Board of Trustees of the California-based non-profit organization GeoHazards International. Furthermore he is a member of the AGU Development Board and holds presently the Chair of the Governing Board of the GEM Foundation in Pavia/Italy under which auspices the open-source Global Earthquake Model is developed.
