On March 1, 2013 GEM held a participatory workshop on the assessment of earthquake risk using an integrated approach as part of the GEM South Asia Expert Meeting and Technical Training in Kathmandu, Nepal. The purpose of the workshop was to introduce GEM’s tools and methods for measuring risk holistically, to have detailed discussions related to the technological needs within the South Asia region for measuring socio-economic vulnerability and resilience, and to better understand regionally specific drivers of seismic risk to be able to suggest pertinent factors for integrated risk assessments that account for both physical and social parameters.

This report features a procedure for the OpenQuake software suite to offer an available vulnerability function for any acceptable set of attributes that the user specifies for a particular building category. It also provides general guidelines on how to submit the vulnerability or fragility functions to the GEM physical vulnerability database. - A Macroseismic Intensity Working Group has been set up following an Expression of Interest (EOI) released on the GEM website in April 2011. The overwhelming response to this EOI highlighted the need for GEM to address this important component of seismic risk.
